Down sizing

Why do we like roller coasters? Fitting in boat renovations and downsizing on top of our full-time jobs could be compared to being on a roller-coaster.

Que music, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs singing “Most people I know think that I am crazy…” The second line is most pertinent. “And I know at times I act a little hazy….”

The week started with me muttering away to myself… “Where are my keys?”. I go on, “Where did I put them? This is ridiculous, I had only had them 30 seconds ago!” I mutter louder, in the hope that anyone in the near vicinity might decide to help me find them.

I finally ask, “Can you help me find my keys?” The subsequent hunt doesn’t unveil the illusive keys so I leave knowing someone would be home before me. I find them in the bottom of my handbag at lunch time. It is a tight rope of frustration and relief all at the same time.

I am not alone. Wednesday, Martin phoned me to say he accidently picked up my wallet (black) instead of his (brown) and thanks for paying for his parking by the way. Luckily, I worked from home.

All week my inner voice was nagging me about what I had not got done that day and I know that I needed to let go of my “to do” list for the day and try to relax. But I am really not sure how to turn my brain off right at this point in time. If I try to turn my mind away from work, it lands on something else that needs doing. I ask myself why? The answer is fairly obvious.

Simply, the last few weeks have been a roller-coaster.

We have a few really big things on the go. And this is creating our stress. A visiting friend asked a very simple and practical question, “What can you remove or let go off?” It is a strategy I like for work, reprioritise, move a deadline, delegate. It works well in most cases.

In the reality of our private life at the moment, there is nothing we can change. Everything is locked into the tracks, like the carriage of a roller coaster. I think the agony and stress occurs as the carriage slowly groans up to the top of the rise and everything is out of our hands and we are locked in our seats. And the adrenalin kicks in as the carriage approaches the top and starts moving over the crest. I hold my breath. Others scream. We all handle stress differently. And you feel the wind rush through your hair as the carriage plummets down the tracks.

My personal philosophy at stressful times is to focus on the positive. OK, I hear some of you say, but you are already so positive. Even more so. When stressed I don’t have time for negativity. It is like my ocean of understanding has dried up and I need to protect my head space, including not over thinking what is not working. I also become very, very practical.

So, following my philosophy I am going to focus on the highlights of the week, and we have had some awesome moments.

Here they are…

Us with Katie Anderson

By far the most significant event and amazing highlight of the week was Monday evening where we attended the Magdala Rose Movie Premiere. Martin had a principle part in the movie. It is an Indie movie and the turn out for opening night was amazing. Thank you to our friends for coming and supporting Martin. Congratulations to Paul Day and his production crew.

It wonderful to see the movie come together over the last three years and see the fruit of everyone’s labour being honoured on the screen. It was a pleasure to meet the amazing cast and crew. Hopefully, the production houses will pick up the movie.

Side note: Martin had done many years of theatre and musicals and a little bit of screen acting prior to having his gorgeous daughters. Three years ago, for his birthday I gave him some screen acting lessons with Joss McWilliam. Martin was spotted at the first lesson by the producer Paul Day of Angel Studios. He approached Martin during a break in the second lesson and asked him to audition for a part in the movie which he did prior to his third lesson. The rest is history. I am not sure I will ever top that as a birthday present.

My downsizing continues.

It has made the highlights list even though it is like its own mini rollercoaster. This week has seen significant progress. Just as personal as my shoes, my attention has been on my art equipment.

For approximately 15 years I have had two trolleys each with 4 drawings full of art equipment, water-colours, conte, pastel, charcoal, pen, inks, glass paints, sketch books and a small collection of my favourite sketches. I loved storing my equipment in a trolley. I simply wheeled the trolley around the house to were ever I wanted to work. One trolley I used to sculpt on.

I also have a full chest of draws of paints and brushes etc. Anyway, a very good friend was here for the movie premiere and spent the morning helping me reduce it all down to one draw to keep. It will go into a box and on to the boat. I have a second draw to be sorted. They need to be sorted by the end of next week. Having deadlines appears to be working for me. And my trusted friend helping me get rid off things.

The main activity is scanning some smaller drawings, sketches and paintings. I throw out a lot. And I want to scan some. It is funny, when it comes to getting rid of my drawings, I all of a sudden get attached to something I have not looked at in many years. I wonder even once I scan them, how long it will be before I look at the scans again. The other activity I need to do is to give the nominated art materials to my niece and another friend both who are getting into painting again. Super happy.

And…
Disco pumps.
Disco pumps.

On the wardrobe front I have also booked a table at the Her Wardrobe Markets (1644 Logan Rd, Mt Gravatt) for this Sunday 1st December… I will be selling some gorgeous clothes, handbags, accessories and yes shoes. At this stage I don’t need counselling.

No teak!!!

And finally, the boat renovations. As I shared on an earlier face book post we have been frustrated by delays beyond everyone’s control. Especially ours. During the week we have had many of the missing pieces of information come together. The teak is now off the deck, they say the deck will be glassed next early next week. We were polishing the sides of the boat on today. Yippee!!! I love being on the tools. Seriously, I have enjoyed it. While I am at the markets Martin will be back at it tomorrow weather permitting.

So back to why do we like roller coasters… is it breaking through the challenge and the relief after the carriage slows down and you feel your heart racing knowing you did it. I think it this is part of it. I also think the without highs and lows we would not appreciate how good life is. And we are living a good life. Even if this transition is stressful.

Downsizing strategies and me… mmm…

Thinking about it and actually getting rid of stuff are two different things. Reading about strategies is good. But it is not actually doing it.

And up until recently, my approach has been led by the meanderings of my mind and anything my eyes rest on.

So, I have started with my wardrobe. It is easier than my shoes… At first, I was distracted. What got me started was a hunt for some clothes to pack to take to Hawaii. I needed to pack for a business trip. Five outfits that are smart casual, not corporate and not my ever-ready Lana Jane yoga pants. Oh, an did I say it needs to fit me. So, I am rummaging and pulling things out of my cupboard. In front of the mirror and the occasional second opinion. Thumbs up, thumbs down.

A couple thoughts…

OMG, I know I have grown out of a few things but am I ready to see the truth… I tried on a few outfits. Doing OK. Some look good, even look better with a bit of weight on. Pleasant surprise. And then, OMG what was I thinking. I am sure it looked better when I purchased it.

That dress easily made the discard pile.

More distractions, a hem needs mending, a dress needs a slight alteration. FYI, I love altering my clothes. I ask myself, where will my sewing machine fit on the boat… I think I know.

Then I remember the shirt of Martin’s that I was converting from long to short sleeved. Already pinned ready to stich. That won’t take long. The shirt is special to me. He wore it on our first dates. And he won’t let me throw out the heels I was wearing on the day we meet.

OK, back to his shirt. I stich it up. Trim the threads. And look at my handy work. I had put a funky fold on the sleeve. LOL. I have put the funky fold on the inside. Ah shit… Have I done the same to the other sleeve? A sigh of relief. The funky fold is on the inside on the other sleeve as well. Obviously, I am not going to unpick it now. I have work to do… Job done, now back to downsizing…

OK, so I have started seriously reading about how to downsize in the hope to find a strategy that works for me.

Que music The Byrds singing “Turn, turn, turn…”
(To everything there is a season. Turn, turn, turn)

My go to resources have been:

Book #1 – “Secrets of Simplicity, learn to live better with less”, by Mary Carlomagno. Purchased at Angus and Robertson many, many, many years ago.

Book #2 – “The life-changing magic of tidying” by Marie Kondo. Purchased at The Mad Hatters Book store in Manly (Brisbane). It is a funky and fun bookstore. Check it out and support an awesome small business.

The former is a beautifully written and illustrated book that takes more of a workbook approach to simplifying your life. I like it. I have always liked this book. It is one book I have lent out a few times and always made sure it comes home again. Perhaps I knew I would need it one day. I was never quite game enough to place a mark on the pages of the workbook, until now. And I have started… a little nervous I must confess.

The latter takes a much simpler approach. My takeaways are:
– Keep only what you love
– Discard all at once, by category.
– Don’t tell family

To the latter point, Martin came home from work and saw the clothes neatly folded and the discard pile on the floor (me in the middle of my chaos) and I had put aside two jumpers that he had purchased for me. And asked him if he minded if I rehomed them. He said something along the lines of do you really want to get rid of them. It might be cold on the boat. To which I replied, Yeh, I know, I have a couple of others, these ones are bulky. And, they were…

No piecemeal approaches here.

So I pulled out all my T-shirts, Night wear and Winter stuff (these were the categories) out of the cupboard and on to the floor.

It was surprisingly easy. The wheelie bin is almost full. I have three big bags for Vinnies. Here’s the kicker, I have done this before and never ended up taking the clothes to Vinnies. They kick around in the back of the car, sit under the house and where-ever else I put them in some sort of ‘just-in-case’ avoidance strategy.

I have learnt over the last 18 months or so that I like to have a just-in-case back-up strategy. For everything… And it is great as a change manager to have a plan b. However, my wardrobe…

So, what’s going to be different this time, I guess two things.

The irrefutable fact that we are moving on to the boat. Sooner rather than later
I have phoned a friend… Not a girlfriend who I may be tempted to go through the clothes with; but a male friend, who will drop the bags off to Vinnies some-time today.

Thanks Bill…

It is hard to get serious about downsizing. The conversations that go on in my head are funny, hardly significant however an inner dialogue that can keep me occupied for hours if I let it.

OK, time to get serious about downsizing. I’m throwing a pair out today… I am saying this more to myself, than you. Why, I selected this pair to be the next to go several weeks ago and I have been admiring them ever since.

These beautiful babies have been a practical “go to” pair that I can honestly say I have worn to death. Not like worn to death because OMG I am so in love with them I have to wear them all the time. No, this is the type of worn to death resulting in the simple fact that they were not the best quality. Hence worn to death…

Notwithstanding, they are, (soon to be were) stunning…

Specifications

Brand: Some Chemist brand that ends in ‘neise.
Heel height: 3.5″ or 9 cm
Colour: Black, Fawn and White with a stunning red slash ankle strap
Purchased: A chemist shoe in Stones Corner

I spotted them walking past a chemist store (I know, amazing right). I quickly tried them on. Gorgeous, $50, bargain, decision-made! I bought them before a meeting with a client. We were meeting at a coffee shop near her office. I ran back and to put them in the car, so I was not seen with my shopping bag… He, he, he…

Not sure why because after the meeting, as we walked back towards her office, we walked past my car and I dragged them out of the car to show her.

It’s a girl thing, OK…

Favourite moment

Loved looking for the perfect handbag to go with them.

Picture this… I wore them only with a black dress… As most of you know I wear mostly colour and these shoes are a statement on their own. So, finding a handbag that really worked, complimented them and the dress without competing with the shoes. Yes, you heard (well read) right, without – competing – with – the – shoes.

So, shopping for the handbag took, two summers of great enjoyment, wandering through shopping centres. This was not a full-on pursuit… It occurred two or three times over two summers. Most likely with a Xmas gift voucher from my mother-in-law in my hand and the two pairs of shoes the handbag had to match in a tote bag. Sometimes these adventures were with a girlfriend, other times not. It was a chill-out time of looking at and admiring handbags…

Funniest moment

Leaving the Caf’ at Amberley RAAF base walking beside a 6ft 4 Group Captain on a 40-degree Queensland summer day. Offered said group captain a lift back to his building (due to the heat). My shoe blew out… And while the ankle strap held on (around my ankle – funny that) the sole was doing it’s own dance trying to take off and fly, as one does at a RAAF base, and I was trying to walk as elegantly as possible given the circumstances.

I did not have another pair of shoes in the car and had to navigate the rest of the day this way…

Again, I had to walk beside said Group Captain, who I am sure was trying not to laugh from the car into the building and up a set of stairs. Just glad I did not run into the Safety Officer who would have had the dilemma of trying to work out if it was safer for me to walk this way or bare-foot (which I am sure there is a policy against) or ask me to leave base. Glad to have been spared this dilemma.

Fair-well my friends. You have served me well.

Side note 1: Downsizing in general… Much, much easier. Especially when you start to get serious about downsizing.

Rehomed:

– 3 seater and 2 seater red lounge suite
– 4 white dining room chairs, and
– 2 teal coloured dining chairs (feature chairs) And before you ask what we are sitting on, we still have 6 dining room chairs and a big couch in the lounge.

Aghhhh… this down-sizing just got serious!!!!
Yesterday, we woke to another day.
Our conversation over breakfast…

Tess – How are you feeling?
Martin – Excited, and anxious…
Tess – Anxious?
Martin – Lots of moving parts?
Tess – I get that.
Martin – How are you feeling?
Tess – Excited, jumping out of my skin…

What are we excited and anxious about, you ask.
Yesterday Martin and I went sailing on a Tayanna 47 ft yacht called Saboteur. Nothing to be scared about that…

Our new home!!!

What is scary is… we had put a deposit on her a couple of weeks prior and yesterday was her sea-trail. What this means is we went out with the current owner and broker and put Saboteur through her paces. Admittedly there was not a lot of wind, but we had fun with her. Asked a million questions and crawled over every inch of her. Why I wore a white T-shirt I have no idea.

Post sea-trial we had a choice then to say yes she is ours, let’s make this unconditional or walk away. We signed on the dotted line… and the sale is now unconditional. We take possession of her on the 10th October. We will own her this time next week.

Wow… we did it. Happy, calm is this real… OMG it is… down-sizing just got serious…

We had lunch…
Post lunch we visited her previous owners who we had tracked down to ask lots of questions about her and living aboard. They are a lovely couple who lived on her for 17 years. Yes, seventeen years… And ironically, they saw us sail her out of the bay for the sea-trails. They have been wonderful to talk to and extremely helpful. They have truly set Saboteur up as a proper live-aboard, complete with washing machine. Yes I know!!! No dragging washing to a laundromat on the Marina… No coins required 😊

We will be pulling her out of the water and doing some work on her. Hoping to level-up down-sizing and be back on the water in December.

We had been talking about “Grey-nomading” on the water when we retire. And have asked ourselves why wait to go live-aboard. We can’t think of one good reason to wait… So, next year some time, after some serious down-sizing, we will move on to her. And yes, we will be moving the dogs and the cat on board with us…

Something to ponder…

We often get asked… well Martin in particular, “Aren’t you getting too old for that?” To which he usually replies, “Yeh, you’re are right, I should wait until I am a little younger.”
What are you waiting for that you would love to do now?

As a shoeaholic, these beautiful babies have been a favourite that I can honestly say I have worn to death.

Specifications:

Brand: Christian Louboutin’s
Height: 5″ or 12.6cm
Colour: The most beautiful red (That’s what they call it)
Purchased: Designer Archives (Brisbane)

They were second-hand, yes second-hand and they were virtually not used. I can only assume either whoever sold them must of have not been able to walk in them or not been comfortable in wearing patent red leather peek-a-toe pumps.

Either way, they made me feel my natural 6”7’ and I loved every second in them.

Favourite moments
So many, Fridays in my favourite jeans and a nice jacket.

A stand-out moment
Going up a flight of stairs at Amberley RAAF base with a lady in uniform commenting, saying how much she loved them but she could not walk in heels like that and in response, she got a lesson in how to walk in seriously high heels.

So, now for the shoeaholic to confess.
I went to throw these out, wrote my post and my inner voice has said. I can fix them!!!

What is wrong with them you ask.

Christian Louboutin’s The most beautiful red

The cork on the back of the heels is peeling off. A couple of “You Tube” videos later and I have worked out how to repair them. Right! (I know – for all the right reasons, they are gorgeous and keep them until I move on the boat) Wrong! (I know – for all the wrong reasons, start throwing things out now. You don’t have enough room the boat).

So I sat on this post and my shoes for over a week. Since then I have repaired two other pairs of shoes… and a belt… LOL.

Where to now?
Still thinking about whether to repair them or not…

This week progress to down-sizing

SOLD – my gorgeous red leather office 3 seater and single seater. Bought by a young man in his 20s for his new apartment in the city. The man has taste. And I am happy they have gone to someone who feel in love with them.
TRASHED – Two pairs of flats… (easy)
REPAIRED – Two pairs of shoes heels… and a belt.
PURCHASED – A new backpack. Easier to carry my laptop on and off the boat… I will write a review on it – it is seriously a brilliant backpack.

A new beginning you ask? And I will answer. But first…

On and off over the years I have contemplated a shoe blog. And those who know me well won’t be surprised. What will surprise you is why.

I need to down-size my shoe collection…

Image of my shoe cabinet. A gorgeous balinese style timber cabinet. With a new beginning my cabinet needs to go & I need to downsize my shoe collection.
My shoe display wall

I am not entering into a debate about how many shoes should be in a shoe collection. As far as I am concerned the answer to that question is whatever is right for you. This needs to take into consideration what you can afford both in dollars and space.

The later is the reason for my downsizing. Martin and I have decided to move onto a boat. Yes, go live aboard. Consequently, my shoe wardrobe (and clothes and handbags (although I don’t have many of the later)) will all need to be down-sized.

To answer some of your most immediate questions.

When will this happen?

At this stage we are planning to move onto a liveaboard,
somewhere between June ’20 and Dec ’20.

What will you move on to? We don’t know yet. However, we are seriously researching.

Are you giving up work? No, not yet. We are intending to take long weekends and do some longer breaks as we get use to our boat (when we get her) and build our skills before doing some longer adventures.

Why? Why not? Super excited! Looking forward to a new beginning.

Image, my favourite funky red shoes...

But in the mean time back to my shoes… I have a philosophy that you should not have anything in your home that is not functional, beautiful and have a home.

I believe my shoes are beautiful. To me they are amazing architecture, with beautiful and creative lines. They have been very much part of my style and professional and personal wardrobe for many years. This is so well known that my friends will tell me in advance if I should wear flats or at least wedges if the party is in a back yard. They know me well…

Image, heading out wearing my funky red heals and a yellow top.

So, over the next 12 months or so I will celebrate my shoes and gradually let them go. A couple of girlfriends already have a few pairs. But in the mean-time I need to get use to the idea of letting some go.

These are my babies…
